The Family Detective — DNA Research Agreement & Consent
Last Updated: September 2026
By purchasing or requesting a DNA genealogy investigation from The Family Detective, the client acknowledges and agrees to the following:
Purpose of the Service
The Family Detective uses DNA match information together with genealogical records and family trees to investigate possible biological and ancestral relationships.
The Family Detective does not operate a DNA laboratory and does not perform DNA testing.
Information We May Analyze
Depending on the investigation, we may analyze information voluntarily supplied by the client, including:
DNA testing company
Shared centimorgans (cM)
Predicted relationships
DNA match names or usernames
Family trees
Shared matches
Known relatives
Genealogical records
Screenshots of DNA-match information
Please do not upload raw DNA data files. The Family Detective does not currently require raw DNA files for its standard DNA genealogy services.
Authorization
The client authorizes The Family Detective and an authorized researcher assigned to the case to use the information provided for the purpose of conducting the requested genealogy investigation.
The client represents that they have the right or appropriate permission to provide the information submitted.
Unexpected Discoveries
DNA genealogy can reveal unexpected or sensitive family information.
This may include previously unknown relatives, adoption, donor conception, misattributed parentage, half-siblings, biological parents or grandparents, or relationships that differ from existing family beliefs.
The client acknowledges this possibility before requesting DNA research.
No Guaranteed Identification
DNA genealogy does not always produce a definitive answer.
A DNA investigation may result in a DNA-Supported Connection, Possible DNA Connection, Unproven Lead, or Unresolved Investigation.
Payment is for the research and analysis performed and does not guarantee identification of a particular biological relative or ancestor.
Not Medical or Legal Testing
The Family Detective's DNA research is for genealogical purposes only.
It is not medical advice, genetic counseling, diagnostic testing, forensic DNA analysis, court-admissible parentage testing, or a legal determination of biological relationship.
Privacy
DNA-match information will be treated as sensitive case information and used for the requested genealogy investigation.
The Family Detective will not sell client DNA genealogy information to advertisers or data brokers.
Consent
Immediately before the DNA customer pays, require these two checkboxes:
☐ I understand that DNA genealogy may reveal unexpected or sensitive biological family relationships, and I wish to proceed.
☐ I have read and agree to the DNA Research Agreement & Consent and authorize The Family Detective to analyze the DNA-match and genealogy information I voluntarily provide for this investigation.
